Tree Planting in the Community
Back in March as the true extent of the Coronavirus was becoming apparent, we had to cancel our planned giveaway of Birch Trees at St Patrick’s Day Parade and Fun Day in Enniskillen.
Now, what to do with 250 baby birches?
We reached out on to a local freecycle group online and the response from local community groups and schools was phenomenal. These orphans were taken in from across Fermanagh & Hinterlands and nurtured during lockdown and now schools have returned, from time to time we are getting updates!
Below a message and photos:
“I am a teacher from St Joseph’s PS in Ederney. Our school received 4 Silver Birch trees from Balcas in March. I think they are usually distributed on St Patrick’s Day but due to the Covid situation it was cancelled. One of Balcas employees Niall Amos gave the trees to our school as he didn’t want them going to waste. His wife Karen is my classroom assistant and she looked after the trees very well during lockdown and brought them to school last week. As Eco Schools Co-ordinator, I just wanted to thank you very much for these trees. We are very grateful to receive them. We took a few photos to show you much my class enjoyed planting them and learning about the importance of trees. We are always grateful for anything at all to promote looking after our planet”.
We too are grateful and heartened to see youthful enthusiasm for trees and delighted to see them appearing in schools activities.
