Retiree returns to retire ‘Reman’ workhorse

September 27, 2024

This week at Balcas, we welcomed back Jackie Hamilton to perform a special task at our Enniskillen site. Jackie, who retired nearly three years ago after firstly managing our Magherafelt sawmill, and then our Remanufacturing Unit in Enniskillen, visited to formally retire a long-serving member of our machinery family—the Multi Head Stenner.

Jackie had a personal connection to the Stenner, as he had brought it with him to Enniskillen when Balcas closed their sawmill in Magherafelt in 2006. In a symbolic moment, he lifted the final piece of ‘feather-edge’ boards from the Stenner line, marking the end of an era. The machine, which started its journey as five horizontal bandsaws in 1995, expanded over the years to become our renowned “9 Head” production line. It has reliably produced fencing boards for many years, earning its place as a true workhorse in the Remanufacturing Unit, adding value to our timber.

However, with advancements in automation and technology, the time has come for an upgrade. Thanks to significant investment from Glennon Brothers, a new, cutting-edge Multi-head Stenner resaw production line is being installed. The new system will provide enhanced safety, greater flexibility, increased speed, and maximise output capacity, ensuring Balcas remains at the forefront of innovation in sawmilling.

The day was filled with nostalgia and celebration as old friends reunited, reflecting on the Stenner’s legacy while eagerly anticipating the future.
