National Apprenticeship Week – Meet Chloe!
We are marking #NationalApprenticeshipWeek by interviewing Chloe O’Brien, the latest recruit to our programme. We have no doubt that Chloe will be an inspiration to many young people who area at a careers crossroads and considering the path less travelled.
“We are thrilled to welcome Chloe O’Brien, our newest apprentice, to Balcas. Her energy, eagerness to learn, and dedication to excellence make her a wonderful addition to our maintenance team. We’re excited to watch her grow and contribute more each day, bringing with her valuable learning and insights from her studies.
Choosing a career path is one of the most significant decisions in a young person’s life, and Chloe was fortunate to join us at a pivotal moment—during a major mill upgrade. This opportunity has given her first-hand experience in the planning and execution of large-scale projects, offering valuable insights into the complexity and impact of innovation investments.
Focusing on the mechanical side, Chloe has the unique opportunity to learn from our highly experienced maintenance teams—whose collective knowledge spans hundreds of years. We look forward to supporting her growth and watching her thrive on her journey with Balcas.” – Dennis McKeown – Engineering Manager
You can read more about Chloe in her interview below.
1. What made you choose a career in maintenance, and how did you feel after your first day in Balcas?
“I’ve always been interested in how things work, and I enjoy problem-solving and working with my hands. When I learned about maintenance as a career, it seemed like the perfect fit. I was initially nervous at first since there were no women in this role that I know of but I was also excited to prove that I belong here just as much as anyone else. As a family we run a kindling business so I’ve always been around timber and as Balcas is so local to me, it wasn’t so daunting!”
2. What has been the most exciting or surprising thing you’ve learned so far in your apprenticeship?
“The biggest surprise for me was how much variety there is in this job. I love how fast I’m learning—what seemed complicated at first is becoming second nature. The hands-on experience has been the most exciting part for me.
3. How do you feel working in a male-dominated environment? Have you encountered any challenges, and how do you handle them?
“I won’t lie—it’s not been that challenging, people are really supportive. There’s not a feeling like I have to prove myself more, and I’ve learned that confidence and a strong work ethic earn respect.”
4. So what kind of support have you received from colleagues? How has that helped you?
“I’ve been lucky to be part of a team who have really helped me settle in, taking the time to teach me the tricks of the trade, and that has made a huge difference. Having people who support you makes it easier to stay motivated .”
5. What advice would you give any other young women unsure about an apprenticeship in manufacturing?
“I’d tell them to go for it! It’s a great career with lots of opportunities, and the more women we have in this industry, the more normal it will become. It’s okay to feel nervous at first, but don’t let fear hold you back. Of course being able to earn while you learn as been a massive positive for me, in choosing this path.”
6. What are you most looking forward to as you continue your apprenticeship and career in this industry?
“I’m really looking forward to becoming more skilled and independent in my work. Right now, I’m still learning a lot, and I know there’s so much more but am relishing the challenge.”
At Balcas, we are committed to providing high-quality opportunities for young people, taking great pride in nurturing talent and helping it thrive within our operations. Our apprenticeships offer a fantastic way to earn while you learn, all within a world-class manufacturing environment—right on your doorstep.
Everyone learns differently. While university or staying in school may suit those who prefer an academic path, apprenticeships offer a hands-on, practical way to gain valuable skills and experience. If you’re someone who learns best by doing, this could be the perfect route for you—just like it is for Chloe. It’s definitely worth considering!
